Pleasure is at the heart of Buddhist teachings. Unskillful pleasure, the Buddha warns, leads to increased suffering and prevents awakening. But skillful pleasure, which I find inside myself, is a necessary part of the spiritual path.
The Buddha says: “One should know how to define [the types of] pleasure, and knowing that, one should pursue pleasure within oneself … this kind of pleasure … should be pursued, … should be developed, … should be cultivated, … and … should not be feared.” —Majjhima Nikaya 139

Please join us for two Saturday mornings as we learn how to develop skillful pleasure in our life and in our practice. We’ll start by learning about three types of pleasure:
- Unskillful Pleasures which the Buddha said increase suffering and
prevent awakening.
- Neutral Pleasures which don’t cause more suffering but also don’t help
me awaken
- Skillful Pleasures which the Buddha recommends we develop for
awakening
We will discuss several important ways the Buddha used pleasure during his own journey of awakening. We will consider how these pleasures strengthened and prepared the Buddha’s mind for awakening. Finally, we will explore a variety of ways we can include skillful pleasure in our own daily practice. These mornings will include time for questions and discussion. We hope to see you there!
